CoCo’s Website Has A New Look!
By Marsha Mitchell, Senior Director of Communications
Community Coalition (CoCo) is excited to announce the launch of our new website! The new site reflects our commitment to creating a digital experience designed with our community in mind. We made sure that the redesign was user friendly and looks and works well on all devices—including desktops, tablets, or smartphones. The new cocosouthla.org is not just a visual upgrade, but a testament to our ongoing commitment to community advocacy and engagement.
Learn About Our Latest Campaigns:
FREE THE LAND—For decades, South Los Angeles residents have called on the city and county to free the land. Transforming land use through nuisance abatement, economic development, and access to public spaces has been a core campaign demand since CoCo’s founding. We want to provide safe places to eat, sleep, work, and play, small businesses, green spaces, great schools, good jobs, healthy food, clean streets, and community events. A community where a working-class family can buy a home, raise their children, and grow old.
STOP THE STOPS—Daily, Black drivers are mentally and physically traumatized during traffic stops. Time and again, across the nation, we have seen Black and Brown men and women lose their lives for what are routine traffic tickets for other citizens. The routine practice of pretextual traffic stops is often marred by racial profiling, police misconduct, and the disproportionate targeting of minority communities. These stops typically involve officers using minor violations as a reason to conduct a stop and search. This has fueled frustration, anger, and disillusionment among Los Angeles residents who are unfairly targeted and marginalized.
BLOCK BY BLOCK—For over 30 years, Community Coalition has known that land use and economic development are inextricably linked processes that expose the complexities of political, social, and financial decision-making. In the best-case scenario, community members can weigh in on developments and projects. But usually, it is only after the planning has been done that the community is “consulted.” Development should be by us and for us—our residents, neighborhoods, and voices should be heard before decisions are made. Those guiding principles were at the core of CoCo’s South Central by South Central’s (SCxSC) organizing campaign, now the Vermont Corridor/Block By Block campaign.
