In Case You Missed It, SENI Celebrated 10 Years of Equitable Education Efforts In Los Angeles
On August 28th, the Equity Alliance for LA’s Kids celebrated 10 years of the Student Equity Needs Index (SENI), a budget tool and framework for education equity in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). SENI was achieved through the advocacy of students, families, educators, and community partners. Since 2014, it has prioritized equitable funds for the highest-need schools, many in historically underserved Black and Brown communities. During the pandemic, it also guided key decisions on teacher recruitment incentives and the establishment of grab-and-go centers.
Celebrating 10 Years of the Student Equity Needs Index
As we recognize SENI’s impact, the Equity Alliance for LA’s Kids urges LAUSD to commit to its long-term investment and decision-making framework to ensure all students receive the support they need to thrive. Developed through extensive input gathered at several community centered meetings—including two youth convenings, a parent convening, a partner convening, plus student surveys—this platform embodies our vision for the education we want from the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). Our platform outlines key priorities that are essential for fostering the type of schools and supports our students deserve:
1. Equitable and Full Funding
Every student should have access to the resources and opportunities necessary for academic success. We believe that funding must be allocated in ways that address the historical disparities faced by underserved communities. This means advocating for budgetary reforms that ensure equitable distribution of resources, focusing particularly on low-income neighborhoods and underfunded schools within LAUSD.
2. Culturally and Linguistically Affirming, Rigorous Learning
Education should reflect and honor the diverse identities of our student population. Our platform calls for curricula that integrate culturally relevant materials and resources, fostering a sense of belonging among students. Moreover, we prioritize rigorous academic standards that challenge students while meeting their individual learning needs—ensuring that content is both accessible and intellectually stimulating.
3. Shared Power and Decision Making with Students, Families, and Community
Empowering stakeholders is crucial to building a more effective and responsive education system. We advocate for structured engagement that allows students, families, and community members to have an authentic voice in decision-making processes. This includes creating advisory boards, implementing participatory budgeting, and establishing regular feedback mechanisms to influence school policies and practices.
4. Safe, Inclusive, and Healing-Centered Learning Environments
Safety is more than just physical security; it encompasses emotional and psychological well-being. Our platform emphasizes the need for trauma-informed practices, restorative justice approaches, and policies that address bullying and discrimination. Schools should be sanctuaries where students feel welcomed and valued, fostering a community built on respect and understanding.
5. Diverse, Supported, and Valued Educators and Staff
The success of our educational platform hinges on the strength and diversity of our teaching staff. We advocate for hiring practices that reflect the racial and cultural diversity of the student body, coupled with comprehensive training and professional development programs. Supporting educators through mentorship, mental health resources, and adequate compensation will not only enhance their effectiveness but also create a more stable and supportive learning environment for students.
Moving Forward
Our policy platform is a living document, reflecting our commitment to continuous dialogue and improvement. We recognize that stakeholders are deeply vested in the educational landscape of Los Angeles and must work together to dismantle systemic barriers. We invite educators, parents, students, and community activists to join us in this transformative journey. For the complete details of our platform, CLICK HERE
