Congrats, SCYEA!

14 Jun Congrats, SCYEA!

In March 2020, the SCYEA (South Central Youth Empowered thru Action) team began to work from home due to the global pandemic of COVID-19. The SCYEA program faced a challenge since youth had concerns with maintaining their grades and applying to colleges and jobs in distance learning. In April 2020, SCYEA created college programming. The team started with a youth newsletter known as the SCYEA newsletter, which evolved. It began as a virtual resource hub for students and families. The SCYEA team created College Wednesday and began to host various colleges and universities through Zoom. The youth received fee waiver codes, application support, and scholarship information from the colleges and universities.

By early January 2021, the youth applied to all their dream schools and a long list of scholarship opportunities. Then, between March and April 2021, the seniors began to receive their acceptance letters from various colleges and universities such as San Francisco State, CSU Los Angeles, CSU Long Beach, CSU Dominguez Hills, San Diego State, Sacramento State, CSU Fullerton, Humboldt State, CSU Northridge, and CSU San Marcos, CSU Monterey Bay, CSU East Bay, and CSU Bakersfield, CSU San Luis Obispo, UCLA, UC Berkeley, UC Irvine, UC Santa Cruz, UC San Diego, UC Riverside, UC Merced, UC Santa Barbara, Spelman College, Clark Atlanta University, Dillard University, Tuskegee University, Xavier University, Cal Luthern, Stanford University, Loyola Marymount University, University of Southern California, and many others.

This last year presented many challenges in a time of distance learning. However, the SCYEA team and the youth ignited change in their communities and schools. The SCYEA team would like to congratulate the Class of 2021! Community Coalition and SCYEA are very proud of all the youth’s accomplishments and are excited for the next chapter for the seniors. A special thank you to the SCYEA Academic Team – Christopher McCroy, Saraia Driver, Tanness Walker, and Yovanna Campos. Thank you for your dedication to the SCYEA program and the youth.

The SCYEA team would like to thank the Social Media Ambassadors for creating the Class of 2021 SCYEA logo. Thank you Aidan Flores, Frank Godinez, and Rachelle Tecuanhuehue. The logo is beautiful!

The SCYEA team looks forward to the 2021-2022 school year. Once again, Congratulations, Class of 2021! You are amazing individuals who are changing the world every day!!!
