14 Jun Marriage Equality Wins Major Support
In a historic announcement May 9, Barack Obama became the first U.S. president to voice his support for same-sex marriage. Conversations with friends, staffers and family had influenced his opinion, Obama said. The week after his statement, the NAACP officially backed same-sex marriage. “Civil marriage is a civil right. … [Our] support for marriage equality is deeply rooted in the Fourteenth Amendment,” said NAACP President and CEO Ben Jealous.
